How long does it take to learn violin?

Learning to play the violin is a challenge for children and adults alike. The journey varies greatly from person to person and depends on several factors. I’ll share my journey so you can compare yourself to me. I’m sure you’ll do way better than me!

Prior musical experience

Prior musical experience is helpful as you might probably know how to read music, understand the concept of rhythms and tempo, etc. that will be of great help. However, if this is your first time learning an instrument, it will surely be challenging.

In my case I had some previous music experience, I knew a few things about music but nothing complex, but it helped at the beginning.

But don’t get discouraged, Beat Master is here to help! If this is your first time learning music, you need to start slow and with easy songs, there’s a catalog of music for all levels and skills.

Time for practice

Another factor that plays a huge role in how quickly you learn, is the amount of time dedicated to practice, and the quality of instruction. However, with consistent practice and dedication, beginners can usually play simple songs in a couple of months. To reach an advanced level, it often takes several years of practice though.

In my experience, I was able to play Twinkle twinkle little start in a couple of weeks. Obviously, it didn’t sound great but at least I was able to play something. Practicing every day will get you really far!

As an adult, is hard to find the time to practice, I usually practice three times a week for like 30 to 45 mins. I’d like to practice more often but I enjoy doing other things as well, like playing with my kids, working out, or building digital products.

Quality of practice

It's important to remember that learning the violin is not simply a matter of time. It's about the quality of practice, not just the quantity. It’s very important to focus on the right technique, holding the bow properly, positioning your wrist and fingers right. It’s really difficult to unlearn bad habits, therefore getting things right in the first place is super important. I’d highly recommend finding a teacher who can provide guidance, feedback, and support you.

That being said, effective, focused practice sessions are more beneficial than long, unfocused ones. In my case, after about 7 months I was able to play the Minuet 1 from the Suzuki method. If you want to see my progress take a look at my TikTok videos. But it’s all about practicing with intention and being able to focus on the parts that you need to improve.

Never-ending learning

Like anything in life, the violin is a never-ending learning. There’s always something new for you to learn, a new challenge all the time. Even the best performers need to keep practicing to make sure their skills are sharp.

And here’s where you need to enjoy the process and not the outcome, I’d highly recommend you to play the music you love, whether is classical or popular music, it’s all about enjoying what you do, life is short and it’s never to late to start learning the violin.

Keep practicing!
